Bohinj lake Slovenia holidays
Most people visiting Slovenia have probably heard about the beautiful lake Bled, which is indeed a sight to see. What most of them are not aware of, is that there is actually another larger, and even more beautiful lake, just 30 minutes (25km) away. It is called Lake Bohinj, and it is located 526 m above sea level inside the Triglav national park.
Lake Bohinj extends over 318 hectares, which makes it the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, located within the Bohinj Valley of the Julian Alps, in the northwestern Upper Carniola region. It is 4.2 km long and 1 km wide glacial lake, dammed by a moraine. Its clear waters are the habitat of brown trout, burbot, European chub, common minnow and Arctic char, eight genera of molluscs, as well as of numerous algae species.
During the summer season there are quite frequent buses from Ljubljana bus station, driving via Bled to Lake Bohinj. Currently there is only one, an early morning international bus from Zagreb to Lake Bohinj. From other international destinations like Venice, Munich or Vienna, you will have to first travel to Ljubljana, then change to a bus towards Bohinj. Unfortunately there is neither train nor bus connection from Ljubljana airport, so you will have to take the airport bus to Ljubljana or Kranj and change a bus there. Another option is to take a taxi transfer from the airport.
If you are wondering what to do when you get there, the area offers many interesting activities. For example excursion boats from eastern to western end of the lake and back. 4 km west of the lake you can find another very popular sight, theS avica waterfall, that can be reached by foot or a car. From the western end of the lake, there is a cable car to Mount Vogel, well known for its spectacular view. If you love hiking, the area offers plenty hiking trails. You can even hike to the top of mount Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia. In the summer you can swim in the cool lake, rent sailing boats, canoes, kayaks, or mountain bikes. In the winter Bohinj becomes a popular skiing area.
Accommodations within the walking distance of the Bohinj lake can be found in Ribčev Laz, Ukanc and Stara Fuzina. Most of them are private apartments and rooms, but there are also smaller hotels and a campsite.
Bohinj lake camping
Camping Bohinj offers two different camps near the lake, in the central part of the Triglav National Park.
Camp Zlatorog is located in Ukanc, in the protected area of Triglav National Park, where spatial interventions are restricted, which is why this area is excellent for Eco camping. Its close proximity to the Lake and Triglav National Park, makes it perfect for a summer holiday. Camp Zlatorog can accommodate up to 500 guests and offers many interesting activities. As the perfect starting point for many hiking trails, it is especially well written in the eyes of all lovers of hiking. The lower gondola station to Mount Vogel is only 300 meters away from the campsite. This accommodation offers 200 parking places, free we-fi access, 16 showers and an option of dish-washing, washing and drying laundry.
The four-star Danica camp is located near the centre of Bohinjska Bistrica, so the guests can still participate in the local events and have easy access to the nearby shops, restaurants, a health centre and a water park. The camp side is surrounded by beautiful nature and perfect choice for a peaceful holiday. Danica camp can accommodate up to 700 guests and offers levelled or grassy terrain, in the sunny or shadowed areas, close to Sava Bohinjka River or the playground and reception.
