Importance of handwashing


Hands are the main pathways of germ transmission during health care. A number of infectious diseases can be spread from one person to another by contaminated hands. They include gastrointestinal infections, such as Salmonella, and respiratory infections, as influenza. Some of them can cause serious complications, especially for young children, the elderly, or those with a weakened immune system. Clean hands are the only protection against infections. Washing them properly can help prevent the spread of the germs (like bacteria and viruses) that cause these diseases. Hand hygiene is therefore the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent health care-associated infections.

We should wash and disinfect hands after each use of the toilet or changing nappies, before, during and after preparing food, between handling raw and cooked or ready-to-eat food, before eating, after using a tissue or handkerchief, before and after attending to sick children or other family members, after smoking, after handling rubbish or working in the garden, after handling animals etc. Thorough hand disinfection is necessary in all healthcare, food, pharmaceutical industry and many other branches where our hands tend to be contaminated.

How to properly wash and disinfect our hands

When we can see the visible dirt on our skin, we should wet our hands and wrists with running water and apply soap that should be distributed to each finger, between the fingers, on the back of the hand and around the wrist. A steady motion should be performed for at least 15 seconds, then we rinse with cold or tempered water. We dry our hands with a disposable tissue.

When our hands are not visibly dirty, our hand disinfection should be performed on clearly clean and dry skin. We apply sufficient (2-5 ml) hand disinfection agent, distribute and rub it completely on all fingers, between them, on the back of the hand, in the palm and around the wrist. We keep the skin moistened with the hand disinfection agent for at least 30 seconds, then rub until dry.
